中国大陆的崛起，使得近年来“学中文”的风潮在世界范围内劲飙。美国大学理事会2003年对高中生的选修调查中发现，选择修中文的高中生是选意大利语的十倍，更十四倍于选修日语者。故而全美各大中小学纷纷开设中文课，一时间中文教师孔缺。许多中文为母语者也接到来自各界的教授中文的邀聘。
然而会说中文不等于会教中文。如何教授一门语言，使学者乐于学，易于解，颇见高下。对于囿于各种原因的非专业中文教师，「大纽约地区中文教师学会」亟愿给予专业方面的帮助，使海外中文教育的范围更爲广阔，水准更获提高。爲此，「大纽约地区中文教师学会」特别开设中文教师培训班，邀请多位中文教学专家讲授中文教学方法和专业知识，从汉字的构成特点到汉语语音，语法和教学特点等等，以及教授过程中各种常见问题，提供他们的个人经验和技巧指导。以系列课程的方式对初涉足于汉语教学领域，或有意涉足中文教育的人士进行系统的培训。
