Abstract:Mandarin
fever is springing up all over the world, and the number of people who are
learning Chinese is increasing swiftly. Nevertheless, under the situation of
the incredible growth in the demand of international Chinese teaching, these
problems become more and more obvious which are the shortage of well-qualified
teachers and educational resources, and learners’ needs of
personalized education. With the development of modern technology and the
popularity of the smart phone, mobile learning has attracted more and more
people’s attention, and it has a very promising market. That is also happening
in the international Chinese teaching field. Mobile Chinese learning
applications are in the ascendant. Chinese-learning applications for the smart
phone have played a positive role in mitigating the shortage of well-qualified
teachers and educational resources, and also satisfying the learners’ needs of
personalized education.
The purpose of this research was to analyze the features of the mobile Chinese-learning applications for the smart phone, propose suggestions for the design of mobile Chinese-learning applications, and eventually help make good use of mobile Chinese-learning applications in Chinese teaching. We used literature search, case study, content analysis and comparative research method. Base on a thorough survey of mobile Chinese-learning applications available in the current market to find out their types and features, we selected Duolingo and Chinese Skill that were two of the popular language learning applications for deep analysis from the aspects of user interface, learning content, learning process, and learning mechanics, to reveal their advantages and disadvantages. The investigation into the comments of Chinese Skill given by users in Google Play provided a round understanding about mobile language-learning applications. We argued that a mobile learning Chinese application should clearly define its targeted users, and its design should be tailored to those users with proper user interfaces, carefully selected content, and a learning process working well with the features of mobile learning; and the gamification design will make an application more appealing.
