The study of “kan” used after the verb reduplication in Chinese

Reduplication is a common grammatical phenomenon in contemporary Chinese. Scholars have studied the meaning of verb reduplication. All the verb reduplications have its regular structure. But the analysis of this “kan” structure which means” kan” is added with the verb reduplication is always neglected by people. So in my study, I will talk about why people add “kan” after verb reduplication. Does “kan” have some special meaning or function or not? I provide three hypotheses and give some analysis about which one will be the most important factor to make these influences on people’s usage in their daily communication. By doing the survey and the interview, I give my conclusion that the reason why people add “kan” after the verb reduplication sometimes is because “kan” has some semantic functions and it has some different meanings with the only verb reduplication expression. I hope my study can help us have a deep study on verb reduplication and the usage of “kan.” The rules of the usage of “kan” will also help some Chinese learners to understand this more clearly.
