Chinese Poetry for a Smart Phone Age

Many Westerners are drawn to the Chinese language by reading Chinese poetry in translation. This paper will explore the possibility of using Tang poetry in classes for early-stage CSL learners. The paper will first present the results ofa character frequency analysis of the 42,651 poems in the Tang corpus. After frequency lists were generated, each poem was scored according to the percentage of high-frequency characters it contained. Twelve poems were chosen from the 25 top-scoring (highly accessible) poems to form the basis of an experimental learning module on Chinese poetry for early-stage CSL learners.

The second part of the paper will demonstrate an innovative software app for mobile devices designed to provide a comprehensive introduction to these poems for non-native speakers of Chinese. The free app is designed to enable the early-stage learners to master the meaning, pronunciation, and writing of a handful of short poems, thereby encouraging their interest in the cultural richness of the Chinese language.
This paper, in sum, will provide a practical example of how authentic historical language materials can be made accessible to students in new and powerful ways using the latest in modern mobile touch screen technology.
