The Presence of Jianyin in Localized Putonghua and Its Cultural and Linguistic Significance

To implement my plan of research on localized Putonghua 普通话 which I had outlined in one of my previous presentations on Chinese language teaching, I will, in this presentation, focus on the aspect of jianyin 尖音 (z, c, s followed by i:, ü or other vowels preceded by i:/ü) and tuanyin 团音 (j, q, x) in connection with zh, ch, sh, g, k and h and their presence in localized Putonghua uttered by present-day Chinese. The presentation will first introduce the relationship between jgx and gkh and between jqx and zcs from the perspectives of historical phonology with illustrations from the present-day pronunciation on the Beijing Opera stage. Then the presentation will draw the audience's attention to the presence of jianyin 尖音 in localized Putonghua (whose standardized pronunciation itself does not allow jianyin 尖音) spoken by people from various regions of China. At the same time, a clear distinction will be made between the replacement of j,q,x with z,c,s and that of zh,ch,sh with z,c,s in various versions of localized Putonghua. The illustrations will also be provided with an analysis of some cultural factors that cause or effect these phonetic changes.The presentation aims to promote an awareness of such historical and present phonetic phenomena among Chinese language teachers and help Mandarin learners to speak Putonghua accurately and raise their ability to understand, effectively, localized Putonghua spoken by native Chinese.
