Engaging Learners in Cultural Thinking and Activities:

From Peking Opera to Reality Show

Cultural awareness remains a heated topic in language teaching. Culture includes the pattern of everyday life, the do’s and don’ts of personal behavior, and all the points of interaction between the individual and the society (Brooks, 1975).  In second language teaching, according to new foreign language standards, language and culture are inseparably intertwined (Omaggio, 2000).

In order to incorporate cultural elements into language classroom I have explored various approaches in Third Year Chinese class to intellectually challenge learners so as to help develop the skills to delve into the culture more deeply on their own. These approaches include cultural projects, Peking Opera mask making, reality show etc. I believe by exposing students to these materials, their cultural awareness will be enhanced which will ultimately benefit their language learning.
