Strategies for Improving Students’ Comprehensive Ability

In most colleges, there have been a lot of complains from the teachers who teach intensive reading for non-major English students on the students’ poor rudimentary /elementary knowledge of English and the teachers’ low teaching efficiency involved. This paper discusses the problems caused by the traditional approach to teach College English and suggests one way to improve students’ rudimentary knowledge of English and develop students’ comprehensive ability is to adopt a variety of teaching methods, organize rich and colorful classroom teaching campaigns and make students participate in it. Based on research findings and the teaching practice, the paper will focus on developing students’ comprehensive ability. In the paper, the teachers’ role is highlighted. The students will find it the most effective way to improve their comprehensive ability if the various kinds of teaching methods, rich and colorful classroom teaching campaigns/activities are applied under the proper direction of a qualified teacher. I think these strategies may also be useful in teaching Chinese to international students.
