To maximize learning, the three modes of
communication must be considered when we backwards design curriculum. This forum will consider how
interpretive, interpersonal and presentational tasks can be designed to create
opportunities for meaningful communication at all proficiency levels. How will
the assessments demonstrate that students have met all of the program goals? Participants
will engage in activities that serve as learning checks and formative
assessment as student work on unit goals. They will also experience a summative
assessment designed to measure those goals. Examples will be drawn from an
intermediate unit, but the instructional and assessment strategies can be
easily adapted for all levels.
