Abstract and Content:

China has a population of 1.2 billion people who speak a common language.  China's economy is

growing extremely rapidly.  China's political power is growing quickly.  China also has an

ancient, sophisticated culture.

Despite these facts, very few American students study Chinese.  Why is this?  Just ask anyone who has tried to learn Chinese - it's a "difficult" language.  This is because pronunciation is difficult, and there is no alphabet.

Yet, the grammar isn't really difficult.  Maybe people just need to get through the initial difficulties to successfully master Chinese.  Here is a new method with new materials to do this that work!

This way, Chinese can be accessible to everyone, not just an elite group who has the leisure to plow through today's teaching materials.

An explanation and demonstration of a new method and material to teach Chinese through the use of traditional phonetic symbols with more accurate pronunciation and key hints to the meaning of both traditional and simplified written characters.  The program allows students to quickly master both the phonetic and Romanized sounding systems without causing phonic confusion.

Method:
Champion Chinese© Sounding Systems and Pronunciation is the first program of the Champion Chinese series.  This is a student centered and immersion principle based program. Multiple-intelligences approach and curriculum design are also emphasized and fully implemented into a whole language learning environment.  This program is geared to teach the Chinese language to native English speakers as a foreign language, and native Chinese language speakers as a Chinese language beginning learning tool by integrating the basic phonetic Zhuyin/system (BoPoMo) and the Romanized Hanyu Pinyin system. Using pictures, stories, songs, rhymes, activity kits, workbook exercises, video and audiotapes, students become familiar with one or both of these systems as a beginning step to Chinese language acquisition.

By integrating visual aids (large flash cards for sounding symbols), songs, rhymes, story-telling, and game-playing to connect students’ previously learned materials to their present learning and creative experiences.  All the activities are interactive, student-centered and designed to tap into a wide variety of learning styles and multiple intelligences.

* Flash cards for phonetic symbols: Using thirty seven traditional phonetic symbols derived from ancient Chinese characters, every symbol not only represents a sound, because its pictographic and ideographic characteristics also indicate either an action or a motion, they can also be used as sounding tools (also a short-cut to Romanized Hanyu Pinyin), as well as basic components for both traditional and simplified Chinese characters.  They also provide an imaginary world for instructors and learners to connect themselves with the life experiences of ancient Chinese people and a room to associate themselves with the ancient civilization and culture of China.  A very important usage of those symbols and this particular approach is to stimulate and elevate young learners’ right brain development.

Result (benefit for attendants):

This program is now the most effective program in beginning Chinese language education in the world.  The program will assist people to teach and learn either one or both the phonetic and Romanized sounding systems in a short period and offer them an easy short-cut to both traditional and simplified character materials without losing the logic and spirit of Chinese language and culture.

For policy makers and second-language teachers: They will experience why and how Chinese, this “so called” extremely difficult language can be taught and learned in such an effective and interesting manner.  They will have a clear view of the trend of foreign-language education, and be able to gain a new insight of what they can do to set proper goals and directions for the school systems, and apply this concept and approach to the languages that they are promoting and teaching.

For Chinese language teachers and students with or without any Chinese language background: They should regain confidence in the traditional materials that have been the soul and spirit of Chinese heritage and culture, and re-gear their direction to make the best use of irreplaceable traditional tools.  They will start at the beginning few minutes embracing the short-cut of learning and memorizing the phonetic symbols and the associate Romanized letters to sound out Chinese characters and establishing an important and solid foundation.
