Brand New Chinese: A New Type of Text Book

Wenchao He, New York University

In the last three years, we have created a new approach in teaching Chinese, computerized elementary and intermediate course. The computerized Chinese course employs the computer technology to largely replace handwriting Chinese character by Pinyin inputting Chinese character for the first year students, brings connection between writing character and its phonetics. The design of this new course develops a few critical short cuts that will reduce the pain-gain ratio. With removal of the obstacle of handwriting Chinese character, the new types of practices and activities along with advanced reading and writing training involving internet and other new computer technology makes learning Chinese no longer a slow and painful process. In this new curriculum, computer is no longer only a typing tool, but part of the curriculum. We now badly need a textbook especially designed for this approach. Many other colleagues, who are using computer to assist their teaching, also need such a book. Two colleagues at NYU and I set up a team to write a new textbook, Brand New Chinese to meet the needs. It contains new concepts, new contents, new methods and new technology. In this presentation, I will introduce some special features of the book.
